The famous birthday paradox

While being together with some friends at a recently visited party, an interesting conversation started. Someone claimed that the possibility of two people having their day of birth on exactly the same day is very big. Most of the people present at that time found that hard to believe.

When arriving home I just had to know more about this phenomenon. Guess what? The person was right. The statement was a proven fact and the figures I found were remarkable.

In a group of about 25 people, there is a more than 50% chance that two of them were born on the same day. In a room of 75 people there is a 99.9% chance of two people matching their birthdays. This result is contrary to our intuition so we call it a paradox. But there is a mathematical explanation for this paradox. You can find more on the following wiki page.
